Downtown Markham is the newest downtown in Canada’s largest metropolis, the Greater Toronto Area. This 243-acre, mixed use development consists of the largest collection of LEED registered buildings in North America.
Transformed from grass plains, Downtown Markham will become a vibrant, entertaining, culturally infused urban centre, promoting sustainability and pedestrian-friendly living. To welcome future residents and tenants of this highly anticipated neighbourhood, the developer, The Remington Group, sought a presentation centre that could be used throughout the project's multi-year construction timeline.
The interior design firm, Figure 3, conceptualized a dynamic structure that would travel through the main entrance in to the interior, engaging with visitors before they even enter the centre. Eventscape was brought in as a consultant to design, engineer, and fabricate the structure from sketch to finished product. The inspiration for the design of the entrance feature was a bird's nest. Visually, the nest suggests a safe haven; a place where families can grow, in comfort and security. Eventscape engineered a self-supporting structure of intertwining wooden ribbons wrapping around the exterior corner of the building, and travelling through the main entrance to form a spherical nest-like structure.
Eventscape also fabricated a handful of other features designed by Figure 3, including a 24 foot oak table with a live edge, 3 columns and a signage feature.
